His Majesty, the Baby (from left: Nathan Campbell; Max Ritvo; Shon Arieh-Lerer, artistic director; John Griswold; Andrew Kahn, producer and manager) is a new experimental comedy group. Described by critics as “endlessly innovative,” “restlessly deconstructive,” and “the future of all entertainment,” HMtB fearlessly pushes the boundaries of sketch comedy. The group performed at the 2014 NYC Fringe Festival and won the Upright Citizens Brigade’s February sketch competition. They recently finished a residency at the People’s Improv Theater in New York, where they wrote and performed a new hour of material each month for seven months. Drawing inspiration from the Pythons and performance art, HMtB blends traditional sketches with dance, poetry, and live music, physical comedy with metaphysical comedy. For the members of HMtB, one of whom is battling cancer at age 23, comedy should deal frankly with our worst fears. In the words of Time Out New York, “What they miss, inexplicably, is that it should be funny.”
